The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF): Cultivating Sustainable Agriculture

The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) stands at the forefront of promoting and
advancing organic agriculture in the United States. Founded in 1990, OFRF is a non-profit
organization dedicated to fostering the widespread adoption and success of organic
farming practices through research, education, and advocacy.
Sir Albert Howard, a British agricultural scientist, is often referred to as the “father of
modern organic farming” for his pioneering work in this field. In the early 20th century,
Howard worked in India as an agricultural research officer, where he observed traditional
farming practices that utilised composting and natural methods to maintain soil fertility
and crop health. Inspired by these methods, Howard developed the concept of organic
farming, emphasizing the importance of soil health, composting, crop rotation, and
biodiversity.
Howard’s book “An Agricultural Testament,” published in 1940, outlined his principles of
organic agriculture and became a seminal work in the field. He advocated for the use of
compost and green manures to enhance soil fertility, the integration of livestock into
farming systems, and the importance of observing and mimicking natural ecosystems.
The expansion of organic agriculture is supporting the environment. Brise Tencer,
Executive Director at OFRF , says “Our findings confirm that organic producers lead the
country in soil health management practices such as cover cropping, perennial
conservation plantings, and water conservation in drought-prone regions.”
At the heart of OFRF’s mission is the commitment to conducting and funding innovative
research that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities facing organic farmers.
Through grants, fellowships, and partnerships with leading agricultural institutions, OFRF
supports scientific inquiry into organic farming methods, soil health, pest and weed
management, and the development of organic seed varieties.
OFRF’s research initiatives are not confined to the laboratory; they are grounded in the
realities of on-farm practices and the experiences of organic farmers across the country.
By collaborating with farmers, extension agents, and other stakeholders, OFRF ensures
that its research efforts are relevant, practical, and responsive to the needs of the organic
farming community.
In addition to research, OFRF plays a vital role in disseminating knowledge and best
practices to farmers, policymakers, and consumers. Through publications, workshops,
webinars, and outreach programs, OFRF empowers farmers with the information and
resources they need to transition to organic production, improve soil health, and enhance
the sustainability of their operations.
Furthermore, OFRF is a staunch advocate for policies that support organic agriculture and
promote a more resilient and equitable food system. By engaging with policymakers at the
local, state, and federal levels, OFRF works to ensure that organic farmers have access to
essential resources, funding, and regulatory frameworks that enable them to thrive.
In a world facing mounting environmental challenges, the work of the Organic Farming
Research Foundation is more critical than ever. By championing organic farming practices
that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and ecological resilience, OFRF is helping to
cultivate a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system that benefits farmers,
consumers, and the planet alike.
OFRF provides funding and programmatic support throughout North America. Most of its
projects are based in the United States, with some in Canada and Mexico. However, OFRF’s
impact extends around the globe, thanks to the wealth of resources available for free on
its website (www.OFRF.org). OFRF staff shared that they were “glad to see that these
resources are being downloaded by growers in almost every part of the world.” By
providing funding, technical assistance, and knowledge exchange opportunities, OFRF
helps farmers transition to organic methods. This support can lead to various benefits,
such as increased crop yields, improved soil fertility, and reduced reliance on expensive
chemical inputs. Additionally, organic farming practices promote environmental
sustainability by minimizing water pollution, preserving biodiversity, and mitigating
climate change impacts. Ultimately, OFRF’s efforts contribute to the global adoption of
organic farming practices, fostering a more sustainable and resilient food system for
communities around the world.
The global impact of OFRF lies in its promotion of organic farming practices, which can
contribute to sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and improved soil health worldwide.
By conducting research, providing education, and advocating for policies supporting
organic farming, OFRF plays a crucial role in advancing environmentally friendly
agricultural practices. This can lead to reduced chemical inputs, increased resilience to
climate change, and improved livelihoods for farmers around the world.
Through its dedication to research, education, and advocacy, OFRF is sowing the seeds of
positive change and nurturing a future where organic agriculture plays a central role in
feeding and nourishing communities around the globe.
