About Susan Payane
Susan Payne has spent the last 30 years building and leading businesses across global emerging markets, with a particular focus on Africa over the past 15 years. After beginning her career as a lawyer, she held senior management roles in finance at JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, as well as managing a hedge fund business.
In 2016, she co-founded Holistic Agricultural Investments Group Ltd, a company specialising in the development of large-scale sustainable agricultural projects across Africa, including commercial farms.
In 2020, Susan co-founded Sustainable Planet, an agri-tech startup with a mission to combat food insecurity and climate change through the production and processing of plant protein.
Sustainable Planet has quickly risen to prominence, winning several prestigious awards in 2023, including the global Food Tech Challenge agri-tech award, the United Nations World Food Forum Innovation Prize, and the African Southern Region Start Up of the Year award. The company has also been listed among the Top 500 Agri-Tech companies globally and has continued to be recognised with further awards in 2024.
Susan’s leadership has been instrumental in these achievements, and her expertise was recognized when she was invited to present Sustainable Planet at COP28 on behalf of the United Nations and Microsoft.
In addition to her role at Sustainable Planet, Susan serves on the Board of the African Agricultural Council and Chairs a gender lens fund she founded to finance climate-smart, female-led SMEs across Africa.
Her academic credentials are equally impressive, with a BA Hons, MA, LLB (Law), and MBA diploma from institutions including Oxford, McGill, St. Andrews and the London School of Economics. Susan is also an accomplished athlete, most recently having won gold, silver and bronze medals in 3 different disciplines at the 2023 and 2024 World Masters Championships and a silver medal at the 2023 European Masters Championships.
Sustainable Planet Ltd. is a UK-based agri-tech food production company launched in 2020 that focuses on addressing global food security and climate change through sustainable agricultural practices. The company produces high-quality plant-based protein using environmentally friendly methods that use 15 times less water than soybeans and transform non-arable lands into productive agricultural sites.
