The AgriNext Conference brings together visionaries who are redefining the landscape of agriculture. Among these leaders stands Clayton Michael-Butler, a native of Mulberry, Indiana, whose journey from farm fields to boardrooms exemplifies the power of passion, innovation, and service.
Clayton’s story begins on Paul C. Michael Farms Inc., where his early involvement in daily operations cultivated a deep-rooted commitment to agriculture. As an active member of Rossville FFA throughout middle and high school, Clayton laid a strong foundation for his future in agribusiness — learning leadership, teamwork, and the importance of stewardship.
After making the impressive decision to graduate from high school early, Clayton answered the call to serve as a United States Marine Corps infantryman. This chapter of military service instilled in him an unshakeable sense of discipline and a distinct leadership style — qualities that would shape every step of his future career.
Upon returning to Indiana, Clayton seamlessly blended academic rigor and hands-on management by pursuing a degree in AgriBusiness at Purdue University, all while leading as the Farm Manager at his family’s operation. This unique intersection of learning and experience positioned him to excel as the agricultural industry evolved.
Graduating in 2016, Clayton joined Syngenta as a Developmental Sales Representative, quickly earning distinction for his results-driven approach and advancing to NK Sales Representative to oversee a multi-state region. His reputation for leadership and business agility took him to Performance Ag Indiana, where he served as General Manager and launched Performance PowerSports of Indiana — a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit.
Clayton’s trajectory continued with AgReliant Genetics, where he held pivotal roles including Western U.S. Dealer Development Lead. He also achieved dual master’s degrees in agricultural economics and business administration from Purdue and Indiana University, reinforcing his capacity to bridge technical expertise with strategic management.
In 2022, driven by his entrepreneurial passion, Clayton founded Upper Echelon Consulting. What began as a business accelerator focused on people, growth strategy, and foundational excellence has since expanded to offer generational transition support, growth consulting, and asset management. Upper Echelon’s innovative Accelerated Growth University equips business owners with vital skills — and Clayton’s leadership has fueled average client growth rates of 176%.
Pushing boundaries further, Clayton co-founded Legacy Meat Co. in 2023, marrying his agricultural legacy with modern business acumen to deliver premium meat products, retail, and catering services.
But Clayton’s influence transcends business. He has led as Chair and board member for the National Agriculture Future of America Advisory Committee from 2020 to 2024. In his personal life, he volunteers as a firefighter in Mulberry and serves on the committee for Folds of Honor, continually giving back to his community.
As AgriNext looks to a future where heritage and innovation intersect, leaders like Clayton Michael-Butler inspire us to embrace change, champion growth, and build a sustainable tomorrow for agriculture.
