At the AgriNext Awards 2024 in Dubai, Terrae Matrum was honoured with the Excellence in Agriculture – Companies – Sustainable Organic Farming Practices award. This recognition highlights the company’s unwavering commitment to ecological farming and sustainable practices, setting a new benchmark for the agricultural sector.
About Terrae Matrum
Terrae Matrum is not just a farm, it is a biodiversity park that embraces nature in its purest form. Located in Italy, Alto Cosentino, Calabria, it is home to 73 different tree species, including fruit-bearing, nectar-rich, forest, ornamental, and indigenous trees. The park also functions as an educational botanical farm, offering visitors an immersive experience in organic farming and environmental stewardship. This unique blend of agriculture and sustainability has earned Terrae Matrum a reputation as a model of ecological farming.
The park’s diverse agricultural offerings include a vast citrus grove with every existing variety of citrus fruit, ranging from limes and bergamot to mandarins, clementines, and grapefruits. The park also boasts a newly developed nectar-rich forest, planted with 250 trees across 20 species, converting previously uncultivated land into a haven for pollinators and wildlife. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to restore and maintain biodiversity in the region.
In addition to these projects, Terrae Matrum is home to an ancient vineyard primarily composed of the Magliocco grape, a traditional variety that adds to the farm’s commitment to preserving native agricultural practices. The farm also houses a centuries-old olive grove with varieties such as Carolea, Roggianella, Tondina, and Dolce. Other crops include figs, almonds, mulberries, pomegranates, chestnuts, and more.
The farm’s commitment to sustainable agriculture is evident in its practice of growing tropical trees in greenhouses and managing a variety of shrubs and trees, such as palms, eucalyptus, and acacia.
Beyond its agricultural initiatives, Terrae Matrum operates as an eco-friendly vacation home: country house and animal-friendly oasis, complete with a cat colony that adds to the park’s peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.
